ChatGPT Pulls In Google Maps Data for 75% of Answers, Here’s What That Means
- ChatGPT added a Google Maps-style local-business block to 121 of 161 answers (75.2%), listing agencies by address, phone, and rating alongside its web citations.
- Two pages on justinha.info.vn, the homepage and the geo-ai-branding service page, were cited in 89.4% and 85.7% of conversations. A specific case study page was cited in 31.7%.
- justinha.info.vn never once appeared inside ChatGPT's local-business Maps layer, yet still topped the citation leaderboard. A Google Business Profile listing is not required to win the citation.
- GTV SEO Agency was the most frequent local-business entry (34 conversations), ahead of TopOnSeek (26) and Saigon Digital (27), even though those same domains cite lower on the pure web-citation leaderboard.
Most GEO advice treats a ChatGPT answer as a list of web citations. That is only part of the picture. In a 161-conversation dataset tracked with ChatGPT Search Tracker, a free Chrome extension built to measure AI Visibility inside ChatGPT, 121 of 161 answers (75.2%) also pulled in a local-business data layer, the kind of address, phone number, and rating data that normally comes from Google Maps. All 161 conversations asked ChatGPT to find a GEO or AI visibility expert in Vietnam.
Which Page on justinha.info.vn Does ChatGPT Actually Cite?
Citation is not a single event that happens to a whole domain. It happens to individual pages, and some pages carry far more weight than others.
| Page | Cited in | Share of 161 conversations |
|---|---|---|
| justinha.info.vn/ (homepage) | 144 | 89.4% |
| /geo-ai-branding (service page) | 138 | 85.7% |
| /about | 116 | 72.0% |
| /case-study/holiday-inn-saigon-airport | 51 | 31.7% |
| /geo-ai-branding/hotel-resort | 30 | 18.6% |
| /contact | 28 | 17.4% |
| /geo-ai-branding/tour-agency | 17 | 10.6% |
| /case-study/cucina-luca | 7 | 4.3% |

The homepage, the core service page, and the about page carry most of the weight. A single case study page, the Holiday Inn Saigon Airport case, was cited in nearly a third of all conversations on its own, well ahead of the Cucina Luca case study and every other case study. That points to one specific, named, data-backed case study outperforming the rest of the case study library, not case studies as a category.
ChatGPT Adds a Hidden Local-Business Layer to Most Answers
Beyond web page citations, ChatGPT’s search results carried a second, separate layer in most answers: a set of local-business entries pulled from map-style data, complete with address, phone number, category, and star rating. This is not a citation in the usual sense. It is closer to a business directory ChatGPT consults alongside the open web.

| Reference type | Occurrences across the dataset |
|---|---|
| Web citation (cite) | 1,411 |
| Direct URL reference | 473 |
| Named entity reference | 316 |
| Local-business map block | 121 |
| Entity metadata (address, hours, phone) | 17 |

121 of 161 conversations, 75.2%, included at least one local-business map block. For a topic like GEO consulting, where the searcher is looking to hire someone, ChatGPT treats physical business presence as relevant enough to surface alongside web content nearly three times out of four.
Which Local Businesses Show Up in That Layer
The local-business layer surfaces a different leaderboard from the pure web-citation leaderboard, built from businesses with a registered address and Maps presence.
| Business | Domain | Appeared in local-business layer |
|---|---|---|
| GTV SEO Agency | gtvseo.com | 34 |
| Dịch Vụ SEO AI | dichvuseoai.com | 32 |
| Saigon Digital | saigon.digital | 27 |
| TopOnSeek (TOS) | toponseek.com | 26 |
| Omega Digital Marketing Agency | omegadigital.org | 20 |
| HiAgency Vietnam | hiagency.au | 19 |
| Fast Marketing Agency | fastmarketing.com.vn | 19 |

GTV SEO Agency leads this specific layer with 34 appearances, well ahead of its position on the pure web-citation leaderboard tracked in our analysis of listicle citations after GPT-5.6 (5.6% citation share there). A registered office address and Maps listing gives a brand a second, separate way to surface in a GEO answer, even when its web citation share is comparatively low.
You Don’t Need a Google Business Profile to Win the Citation
No Maps listing, still the top citation. justinha.info.vn does not appear anywhere in the local-business map layer across all 161 conversations, no address, no phone number, no rating block. It still remained the single most-cited domain overall, at 95.7%.
The web-citation layer and the local-business layer are two separate inputs into the same answer, and a strong showing in one does not require a presence in the other. For a solo consultant or a fully remote GEO practice with no public office address, this matters: the absence of a Maps listing is not a visibility gap that needs fixing, since the web-citation layer alone carried the result here.
What This Means for GEO
A ChatGPT answer for a local or hireable-expert query draws on at least two separate data sources: the open web, and a business-directory-style layer resembling Google Maps. Optimizing only for web content addresses one half of that picture.
For businesses with a physical location, such as those we work with in hotels and resorts or restaurants, a complete and accurate Maps listing is a second, independent lever, not a replacement for web citations. For businesses without one, such as a tour agency operating fully online, the data here shows that lever is not mandatory to win.
Audit Your Own Page and Local-Business Citations
The same two checks that produced this article, page-level citation share and local-business layer presence, can be run on your own domain in a few clicks with the free GEO Audit Tool.
- Ask ChatGPT your core hiring or discovery query and note which of your own pages get cited, not just whether your domain does.
- Check whether your homepage, service page, and about page each carry a citation, or whether the weight sits on one page only.
- Look for a local-business map block in the answer and note whether your brand appears in it.
- If you have a physical location, verify your Google Business Profile details match what ChatGPT is surfacing.
- If you do not have a physical location, confirm your web citations alone are carrying the result, as they did here.
Skip the manual check. The GEO Audit Tool runs this page-level and local-business audit for you, free, and flags which of your pages is actually carrying your citations.
How Was This Data Collected?
This data comes from ChatGPT Search Tracker, a free Chrome extension built by Justin Hà. It works through UI scraping, not API calls, reading the live ChatGPT session directly in the browser. That is how it captures both the standard web citation list and the separate local-business map data ChatGPT pulls into an answer, broken down by reference type. It tracks five data points per conversation, AI Visibility, Share of Voice, Citations, Entities, and Query Fan-Out, the same fan-out behavior covered in our analysis of how ChatGPT picks a brand before it searches, and runs prompt tracking across models over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ChatGPT use Google Maps data in its answers?
Yes. In a 161-conversation dataset, 75.2% of ChatGPT’s answers included a local-business data block with address, phone number, category, and rating, alongside standard web citations.
Do I need a Google Business Profile to be cited by ChatGPT?
Not necessarily. In this dataset, the top-cited domain never appeared in ChatGPT’s local-business layer and still led every web-citation metric tracked.
Which page of my website should I focus on for GEO citations?
In this dataset, the homepage, the core service page, and a single named, data-backed case study page carried the large majority of citations, far more than the case study library as a whole.
