## Do you need a *disavow file*?

Google says most sites do not need the disavow tool, because Google already ignores most spam links (Source: Google Search Central, "Disavow links to your site" help page). Use it only in the situations on the left.

### Use it *when*

You bought links, joined link schemes, or a previous agency built spam links. You see a sudden wave of casino, pharma or adult anchors pointing at your site. You received a manual action for unnatural links in Search Console.

### Skip it *when*

The links are nofollow, ugc or sponsored. The site is simply small, new or has a low Authority Score. The only concern is a third-party toxicity score with no spam evidence behind it.

Is the Backlink Audit Tool free?

Yes. The Backlink Audit Tool by Justin Hà is free, needs no account and has no row limit. The analysis runs in your browser with JavaScript, so there is no server cost to pass on.

Are my backlink files uploaded anywhere?

No. The Backlink Audit Tool reads your CSV, Excel and disavow files locally in the browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab removes the data.

Which exports does the tool accept?

The tool accepts Semrush Backlink Audit exports (All URLs and Domain summary), SE Ranking backlink exports, Semrush referring domain exports, Google Search Console Performance exports and Semrush traffic exports, as .csv, .tsv, .xlsx or .xls.

How is the Risk Score calculated?

The Risk Score of the Backlink Audit Tool rates each referring domain from 0 to 100 based on the spam evidence in its links: spam anchor text, a spam term in the hostname, a spam topic on the source page, an off-topic money anchor on a very weak site, a very low Authority Score or a watchlist TLD. Domains with only nofollow links stay at 20 or below. The Evidence panel shows which signals raised each domain.

Will the tool overwrite my existing disavow file?

No. When you import your previous disavow file, the export keeps every old line and comment in the same order, merges duplicates such as www and non-www versions, and adds new domains under a "# Added YYYY-MM-DD" comment. That makes "Replace" in Search Console safe.

Should I disavow every domain with a high Semrush Toxic Score?

No. A Semrush Toxic Score of 60 or more puts a domain in the review list, not in the disavow file. Open the evidence panel and example URLs first; the tool only allows bulk confirm when the risk is 81 or more and the links are followed.

Can the tool prove that backlinks increased my traffic?

No. The Traffic & Links view measures correlation between new referring domains and Search Console clicks, and flags results that could be chance. Seasonality, content updates and Google updates also move traffic, so a correlation is a lead, not proof.

Can I send the results to a client?

Yes. The Report tab exports a text-based PDF with a cover page, risk summary, domains to review, anchor findings, disavow changes, the traffic comparison and recommendations. CSV exports are available for domains, anchors and outreach contacts.

**Most sites never need a disavow file.** Google already ignores most spam links. Use this only for clear link spam, for example links you bought or a spam attack. Scores are review signals, not proof. Only entries you confirm are exported. [Read Google's guidance](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/2648487).

1. **Import your previous disavow file** (if you have one) so nothing already disavowed is lost.

2. **Add candidates to the queue** from Risk Review or Anchors, or with the buttons below.

3. **Open Evidence and confirm** each entry, or bulk-confirm only the strong-evidence domains.

4. **Export**, check the Kept / Added / Removed summary, then upload with "Replace" in Search Console.

### How to *Submit*

1. Click **"Review changes and export .txt"** and download the file.

2. Open the [Google Disavow Tool](https://search.google.com/search-console/disavow-links) and select your property.

3. **First time:** upload the file. **Already have a file:** choose "Replace". This is safe only because the exported file already includes every line from the old file you imported.

4. Keep the exported file. Next time, import it here to continue where you left off.
